Johann Friedrich Reichardt (Königsberg 1752 - Halle 1814) was one of the most famous musicians of the Goethezeit. He was a composer and musical critic. He intensely collaborated with J. W. von Goethe for a few years, writing music for some of his libretti: Erwin and Elmire (1788), Claudine von Villa Bella (1789) and Jery und Bätely (1789) among others. He settled down in Berlin, where he was at the service of the King of Prussia. His daughter, Louise Reichardt, became a famous song composer, whereas sing father's work seems to have fallen into oblivion.

While he was at the service of the King of Prussia as Kapellmeister, J. F. Reichardt composed Douze élégies et romanzes and dedicated them to Madame Louis Bonaparte. All poems are in French, and they were written by a Hoffmann. We have no more information about him, as the exemplar at the Bavarian State Library in Munich provides no data at all. However, a short notice or "Kurze Anzeige" published in the music magazine Leipziger Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung (29 September 1804) allows us to get an idea of the reception that this work might have had in the German-speaking territories of that time:

Was die meisten Reichardtschen Kompositionen auszeichnet, ist Originalität, kunstvolle Behandlung und Abgemessenheit des Ganzen, bey richtiger Darstellung des Einzelnen. Was sich nicht an ihnen auszeichnet, ist eine gewisse Methode, vor der der Verf. nur selten abgeht, und die zuweilen ins Trockene fällt. Auch diese seine mitgetheilten Romanzen und Elegieen sind voll Schönheiten und Charakter, aber mitunter etwas breit und gezogen. Die erste Elegie ist ein Muster, wie man Elegieen musikalisch behandeln und darstellen soll. Sie athmet ganz den schwärmerisch-klagenden Ton dieser Dichtungsart, und stirbt, wie das Lied einer Nachtigall, in Seufzern dahin. Eben so gelungen ist der Chanson: un jour sous la coudrelle etc.

This collection includes 12 pieces, and it is difficult to choose one among them. For this section, we followed the short notice of the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung (see above) and we shall study the song Un jour sous la coudrelle.
